Exploring New Possibilities in Drum Making
Acoustic drums are instruments primarily crafted from wood.
For decades, Pearl has continued to pursue the highest standards of quality and sound in drum manufacturing. At the same time, we have become increasingly aware of the responsibility that comes with using natural resources—and the need to think more deeply about sustainability.
This awareness led us to an emerging technology with new potential: 3D printing using materials that include recycled wood.
Could this technology be applied to drum manufacturing?
That simple question marked the beginning of Pearl’s environmentally conscious 3D-printed drum project.
The project was developed in collaboration with ”Inoue Kikaku”, a company based in Fukuoka, Japan, specializing in wood distribution, processing, product planning, and material development.
For the drum shell, we used pellets made by blending resin with wood powder that includes recycled wood. These environmentally conscious materials were shaped into a single-piece shell using a large-scale 3D printer, opening up a new approach to drum construction.
The prototype 3D-printed drum was first unveiled to the public at a Japanese exhibition in July 2025.
The recycled material used for the displayed drum set came from maple offcuts—wood that is most commonly used in the production of Pearl’s high-end drums. These offcuts were processed into wood powder, mixed with resin, and repurposed as a wood-plastic material for 3D printing.
To bring the project full circle, the prototype drum was played by world-renowned drummer Shane Gaalaas, known for his work with numerous internationally recognized artists. Through his performance—alongside footage from the manufacturing process and factory setting—the sound and character of this new drum were brought to life.
This initiative is not simply about creating a new product.
It represents an exploration into how discarded materials can be reimagined, and how the manufacturing process itself can be reconsidered.
By combining environmental awareness with a sincere commitment to instrument making, Pearl continues to explore what sustainable craftsmanship can look like for the future. While honoring the quality and sound that define our instruments, we remain dedicated to finding new, responsible paths forward in drum manufacturing.
