Matthew Nichols is a versatile percussionist and educator who performs across orchestral, jazz, chamber, and contemporary music scenes. A regular performer with Nu Deco Ensemble, he has contributed to collaborations with artists like Jacob Collier, Jose James, Derrick Hodge, and Ben Folds. His orchestral experience includes playing as a section member with Palm Beach Symphony, New World Symphony, Miami Symphony, South Florida Symphony, Miami Music Festival, and Florida Grand Opera. 

In the jazz world, Matthew has performed as a drummer with the Matt Joy Trio and Quintet and regularly plays with the Florida Wind Symphony Jazz Orchestra. He was recently featured with the Fest Arts Boca Jazz Orchestra. His chamber music credits include performances with Gabriel Beavers at UM, New World Symphony as a guest artist, and Candlelight Concerts with the Collins Quartet. 

Beyond the concert stage, Matthew is also an active educator. He is the senior instructor of percussion at Florida Atlantic University and has been teaching privately in the community since 2016. He has worked with local schools, including Carver Middle School, Wellington Landings Middle School, Boca Raton High School, and Dreyfoos School of the Arts. In addition, he has served as an adjudicator for local competitions and music assessments. 

Matthew has also performed in church settings since 2017 as a multi-instrumentalist and has recently served as the music director at Hammock Street Church. He has also appeared as a performer on Luke James’ To Feel Loved benefit concert, streamed on BET. With a passion for collaboration, education, and performance, Matthew continues to be an in-demand percussionist in South Florida’s vibrant music scene.
