My Pearl Story Vol. 2 – Stories from the Pearl Family Around the World
To celebrate Pearl's 80th Anniversary, we invited drummers around the world to share their personal stories and memories with Pearl.Here are some of the wonderful stories shared by our Pearl community. [Tom Moore]I am on my second set of Pearls. My first kit was a 1989 BLX in 103 Piano Black. I still own it, but I now also have a 2005 Masters Studio kit. To me, Pearl birch drums cannot be beaten. I played many gigs with my ’89 BLX kit, loved every minute of it, and will probably never part with it. Now for my cool Pearl story. I am 67, and three things still get me excited like a 12-year-old: dogs, baseball games, and new drum gear. One of my best act-like-a-kid moments happened around 1993, when I was in the Marine Corps and driving from Virginia to my next duty station in California. I knew Pearl was in Nashville, so I talked my wife into letting me find the Metroplex Drive building—this was before GPS—because I wanted to peek at a building full of drums. We found it late in the day, and you were still open. I thought I might go inside and ask for a couple of stickers or some Pearl swag while trying not to be obtrusive. I approached a woman at the front desk and, in a polite, shy, almost begging tone, said, “Ma’am, I’m driving across the country, and I’m a Pearl customer. I was wondering if I might get a couple of Pearl stickers.” She asked me to wait a minute and returned with a man named Scott. He introduced himself: “Hi, I’m Scott Miller, the artist relations guy. Would you like a tour?” I had to stop myself from jumping up and down. Pretending to be calm, I replied, “If you’re sure it’s no trouble.” The tour was incredible. When we returned, the woman at the front desk had gathered all kinds of Pearl swag for me. I still have the Myron Grombacher, Kenny Aronoff, and Tico Torres posters you gave me hanging in my drum room. It remains one of my best memories.Thanks again!!Tom Moore [t.A.K.a]桜も散った春先に入学した大学の軽音部。 [Brad Kinchen]I had won a marvelous Pearl snare in a contest with the express idea of giving it my drumming friend, when I gave it to him he was absolutely thrilled with it and watching him integrate it into his kit and make great beats with it was one helluva a wonderful thing. [Squillz]When i was 8 I had a completely random, out of nowhere spinal bleed which paralysed me from the chest down. I always hated being labelled as "disabled" and always be encouraged to take part in "wheelchair" X,Y or Z. I just wanted to hang out with my friends who never saw me as different and as the years went by, I knew music was my passion. I sat behind a drum kit for the first time when I was 14, figured i could operate the kick just by resting my front right wheel on the pedal, putting my brakes on and rocking forward to hit the kick.I now own a beautiful Pearl Reference which is one of the few things that gives me a reason to get up in the morning. When I play drums, I don't feel disabled. All I'm focusing on is staying in time with the music, and in those blissful moments, I am alive and I am free. [Kali]My Pearl story began in 2019 at Rockin’1000 in Frankfurt. I was fourteen years old and that day completely changed my life. I saw with my amazed childlike eyes my very first drum booth and I decided to improvise something, for the first time in front of so many people. I’ll never forget the excitement felt while I was playing “Painkiller” intro, hearing the powerful sound coming out from that Master Maple kit exposed. Thanks to such an unforgettable experience I got amazed by the world of music around me and I understood playing drums would have become my life and biggest dream.Soon afterwards, I bought my first kit, a vintage black Pearl Export, which accompanied me through all the countless hours of rehearsals, playthroughs and shows across Italy till now. It was an essential part of this journey.Later at the age of seventeen I started studying with George Kollias: seeing my teacher playing everyday with such a big Pearl Master drumkit made my love for drums even bigger… All my favorite drum legends I looked up to for my entire life were Pearl artists! I became obsessed! And I had the chance to meet some of these heroes at NAMM Pearl both too. Having the opportunity to get a closeup view of every performance, talking with the entire Pearl team, discovering the instrument deepest details was the biggest inspiration boost ever and I can still feel my heartbeat speeding up when I sit behind a Pearl kit, remembering the true passion they shared with me.I officially signed with Pearl this year, having the chance to play with wonderful Reference Series double kick kits on my first Australia and Japan tour. And meeting Pearl Japan team on the other side of the world was a true honor!Now that I am also studying mechanical engineering while touring, would be dream maybe one day to design my next Pearl double pedal!Looking back, Pearl and everyone from the team have always been there for me in all the major moments of my life, through every single step of my journey, believing in my drumming and helping me becoming the drummer and artist I am today… and the journey has just started.Happy 80th anniversary, Pearl. Thanks for growing me up everyday like a family.
Glen Caruba Named President of Pearl Corporation
Pearl Corporation is pleased to announce the appointment of Glen Caruba as President of its U.S. operations, succeeding Terry West, who is retiring at the end of this year. The leadership transition marks a new chapter for Pearl as the company continues its commitment to innovation, quality, and supporting musicians throughout North America. Caruba brings extensive experience within Pearl Corporation, most recently serving as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. His longstanding involvement with the company, combined with his understanding of the musical instrument industry, positions him to guide the organization into its next phase of growth. Throughout his career at Pearl, Caruba has played an important role in supporting the company's sales and marketing initiatives and strengthening relationships with retail partners. As President, he will oversee the company's U.S. operations and strategic direction, while continuing to build upon Pearl's established reputation among musicians, educators, and our vast dealer network. “As a kid, I remember poring over my first Pearl Export catalog, dreaming of the day I’d have one of those kits for myself. Now, leading the company is beyond anything I imagined. My lifelong passion for music has been intertwined with Pearl for decades, and I look forward to guiding one of the most iconic brands in music to new heights,”stated Caruba. Caruba succeeds Terry West, whose leadership and contributions have helped shape Pearl Corporation's position in the North American musical instrument market. Pearl recognizes West's dedicated service and the role he has played in advancing the company's legacy. “Looking back on more than 39 years with this great company, I am truly honored and humbled by the countless opportunities, cherished experiences, and lifelong friendships I have been so fortunate to acquire,” West stated. “Bittersweet is a term often used to describe retirement, and now I fully understand why. The word perfectly captures the mix of sadness at leaving an organization you deeply love and the pure excitement of what’s next in life's journey.” Pearl Corporation will remain focused on delivering innovative products, supporting its network of dealers and artists, and maintaining the standards of quality and performance that have defined Pearl for generations. .pearl-west-section { display: flex !important; flex-direction: row !important; align-items: flex-start !important; gap: 20px !important; width: 100%; border-top: 1px solid #dddddd; padding-top: 20px; box-sizing: border-box; } .pearl-west-section img.pearl-west-photo { display: block !important; width: 150px !important; max-width: 150px !important; min-width: 150px !important; height: auto !important; flex: 0 0 150px !important; float: none !important; } .pearl-west-text { flex: 1 1 0% !important; min-width: 0 !important; width: auto !important; } .pearl-west-text blockquote { margin: 0 !important; } @media screen and (max-width: 767px) { .pearl-west-section { flex-direction: column !important; gap: 15px !important; } .pearl-west-section img.pearl-west-photo { width: 150px !important; max-width: 100% !important; min-width: 0 !important; flex: none !important; } .pearl-west-text { width: 100% !important; flex: none !important; } }
My Pearl Story - Gino Banks
What made you choose pearl?The sound and feel of the drums is truly second to none. The tonal quality of the drums got to me immediately. My ears were already accustomed to the sound of Pearl. Some of my favourite drummers like Dennis Chambers, Will Kennedy, Mike Mangini, Omar Hakim and at the time Virgil Donati played Pearl and I was listening to them a lot and fell in love with the sound even though they all their individual touch. What I find great about the sound of Pearl is that with a variety of drumheads you can get a real pointed attack with a warm rounded body and sustain. It’s also just focused enough to sound great acoustically and at the same time be very microphone friendly. First pearl kit/year Around 2011, Keshav Dhanraj, who was the Pearl drums brand manager at the time with Furtados Music India approached me to check out a new series of Pearl Drums called the Pearl Reference Series. I was already with another company at the time and was doing okay. But my friend and fellow Pearl artist Jai Row Kavi just did a show on the Pearl Reference and he was like you got to check these out. So Keshav and Furtados hooked it up for me to try at my next concert. I didi and I was completely blown away. Never heard drums sound like that. My bandmates and the sound engineer loved it too. This experience made me want to play Pearl Drums exclusively. A big thank you to Furtados Music India, Keshav, Anthony and Joseph Gomes, Inderpal Singh and from Pearl Drums Japan Sho Yokota and the entire Pearl Drums Family so all the love and support. Favorite piece of Pearl gear of all time?That’s such a tough one to answer - It’s all so good! But I have to pick the Pearl Eliminator Double Pedal - they are ever so reliable, durable and always feel so comfortable to play. After drumsticks the pedals are very crucial and the Pearl Eliminator delivers every time.
My Pearl Story – Stories from Pearl Family Around the World
To celebrate Pearl's 80th Anniversary, we invited drummers around the world to share their personal stories and memories with Pearl.Here are some of the wonderful stories shared by our Pearl community. [Sergiusz Sęk]As long as I can remember, I've always wanted to play the drums. I had a feeling that it could be something for me, but at the same time, I had a stupid belief that I needed a real drum kit to start and that I would never get one. It was a mistake that was holding me back from my dreams.Everything changed when I went to university. I chose the Academy of Art in Szczecin, Poland, and during a presentation of various workshops, I found a huge hall with a very high ceiling (a terrible place to play, tbh) and a lot of different stuff, including a drum kit. When I saw it, I knew that I had to do whatever it took to play it. It was a Pearl Vision Birch, a 5-piece kit with a clear birch finish.To get permission to enter this room, I had to take classes there, but there was a limit on how many students could be in the group, and unfortunately, I didn't get in. Luckily, my friend was in this group, and she also wanted to play, so we could start together. When I hit the drums for the very first time and felt those vibrations resonating in my body, I knew this was it — I wanted to learn how to play this instrument for the rest of my life.For a few months, we played together, taking turns every 15–20 minutes. It was a real hot seat. It was fun at the beginning, but I wanted more. I talked to the owner of this kit and the room attendant, and I got permission to get the keys. I'm a fan of heavy music, so I had to have a double pedal. After a few months, some parts broke because it was a cheap piece of rubbish, so I decided to buy something more solid. I bought a second-hand Pearl P932 in very good shape. It was a game changer and allowed me to play more efficiently.I have been playing for 3 years now, terrorizing the whole academy with blast beats and double bass. Of course, it's not my kit. It's for public use, but I take care of it as if it were mine, and I'm really attached to it. Unfortunately, one day I will have to leave the academy, and I will lose access to these drums. However, when I finally get my own kit, it will definitely be a Pearl, because it was my very first encounter with drums and I have a lot of good memories with them. I'm very grateful and happy that this drum kit appeared in my life. It brought so much color to it. Below is a photo of my setup for evening sessions and my friend from the period when we started. [Blueyブルー子]I started learning drums a few years ago when I purchased the signature model snare drum released by my favourite Japanese female band SCANDAL drummer Rina @urarina821 together with Pearl @pearl.drums.jp @pearl_drums_global @pearl_drumsPairing the snare drum with Pearl Reference drums as my drum kit, I love the sound and tone especially when I play SCANDAL’s songs. As a female drummer like Rina, I will try my best and continue to play drums.Congratulations to Pearl on its 80th anniversary and I will continue to support by using Pearl’s products.Rinaさんにずっと憧れて、ドラムを始めました。Pearlドラムの音が強くて、心に刻み込みました。これからもRinaさんに目指して頑張っていきます! [Lior Levy]Before Pearl, the only thing creaking worse than my bass pedal was my aching back.My son is autistic and non-verbal, and he has demand avoidance, so he doesn't respond well to teachers. But he's been drawn to drums since he was four.So I made it my mission to learn, hoping to help him find a way in.Somewhere on our journey, I fell in love with drumming myself.However, I'm over 40, and I soon found that no matter how I adjusted my position, sitting behind the kit hurt after just 20-30 minutes.Then I got my Pearl Roadster D-1500TGL. Now I spend TWO HOURS behind the kit without discomfort.Next came the pedal.I'd spent quite a while debating shortboard vs. longboard before choosing the Pearl Demon Chain P-3000C, partly because its modularity meant I didn't have to commit to either.Suddenly, advice I'd heard from great drummers ("It should feel like dribbling a basketball," "Let the pedal do the work for you") made sense.The pedal carried the weight of my leg rather than fight it, and the unintended doubles disappeared.Today my son joins me in his own way: sometimes he sits at the kit, sometimes he uses my practice pad, and sometimes he just sits in the room while I practice. Drums give us a language that doesn't need words.I'm now slowly building my dream hybrid acoustic/electronic kit, with two separate kick drums. A second Demon Chain for my left foot was already on the shopping list. Winning the Pearl Eliminator Mono Pro Chain would bring that kit closer, and give my left foot its own Pearl moment. [Mike D.]My very first pair of Pearl drumsticks. These were the first drumsticks I ever owned. I got them when I joined my school's concert band in junior high. My family took me to a music store, and my dad bought them for me.After trying out so many different pairs, the Pearl sticks just felt right the moment I picked them up.That was 15 years ago, and I've been playing Pearl sticks ever since.
My Pearl Story - Miguel Lamas
I officially started playing drums at the age of 4, but even before that, around 1994–95, I was already hitting my uncle’s old black Pearl Export kit. SO PEARL WERE THE FIRST DRUMS I EVER PLAYED IN MY LIFE. I still remember when my parents used to take me to his place… I always wanted to go straight to his studio and spend the whole day playing. Then, at the age of 6, I went to my first music school and did my first live performance. The drum kit was another Pearl Export, this time in maroon. The toms were bigger than me (12”, 13”, 16”), and you could barely see me behind the kit, BUT I REMEMBER BEING THE HAPPIEST KID IN THE WHOLE WORLD. I also remember watching VHS tapes of Dennis Chambers playing those amazing big Pearl kits. Then the yellow kit came out, and it completely blew me away. The beauty and the sound of those drums, man! At school, I barely paid attention to the teacher because I was always dreaming about that kit and drawing it in my maths books… I OFFICIALLY SIGNED WITH PEARL IN 2015, and my first performance as a Pearl endorser was at TamTam DrumFest in Seville, Spain. I was doing my performance, enjoying a beautiful red Reference Series kit, and when I came off stage, Dennis Chambers was there! He was also playing at the festival, but I hadn’t even realized it until that moment. We spent the whole night talking about life and drums, and I still remember it as one of the best moments of my life. Today, I have the joy and privilege of playing Pearl every single day, and I still enjoy it just as much as I did when I was a kid. WHEN YOU GO TO A CONCERT AND SEE A PEARL KIT ON STAGE, YOU JUST KNOW EVERYTHING IS GOING TO WORK! Nowadays, I use different Pearl series, and every one of them works perfectly across all kinds of styles and situations. One of my favorite things is traveling around the world and getting the chance to play different Pearl kits that have been exposed to all kinds of weather conditions, humidity, temperatures… and somehow, they always sound great and have something special about them!IT’S BEEN A LONG JOURNEY TOGETHER WITH THE BEST BRAND IN THE WORLD, AND WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF PAGES LEFT TO WRITE TOGETHER.HAPPY 80TH ANNIVERSARY, PEARL!THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME BE PART OF YOUR HISTORY.

My Pearl Story - Calvin Rodgers
WHY PEARL?WHEN I WAS A YOUNG KID, I DIDN’T OWN A DRUMKIT.At that time, the Guitar Center’s drum departments were like a dream. There was a Pearl Drumkit on a riser, sitting in the window. At night when they’d close, you could drive past that store, and the see the drums all lit up through the glass window. I dreamed and dreamed about playing those drums. I got a chance to play that kit - it was an MMX. I always said whenever I get a big gig,I’M GONNA SAVE MY MONEY AND BUY MYSELF A PEARL MMX. FIRST PEARL KIT?As fate would have it, my parents went to that same Guitar Center, when they decided to purchase me a kit. It was 1986, and i was 8yrs old. My dad knew I loved that Pearl kit in the window, so he decided on the Pearl Export. I played that kit everyday, for years.I RECORDED MY FIRST ALBUM ON THAT KIT AS WELL. FAVORITE PEARL GEAR?I love EVERYTHING Pearl makes…I love the fact that I don’t have to seek out different brands for snares, and hardware, and percussion...That being said, if i had to say there was one piece of gear that was my favorite, I’d probably have to say the SENSITONE HERITAGE ALLOY BLACK/BRASS SNARE DRUM.
