Overview
Michael D'Angelo is a Grammy-nominated drummer and educator based in Denver, CO. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Percussion Performance from the University of North Texas, a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder.
Michael has performed with a wide array of artists in a variety of musical situations including Doc Severinsen, Dave Brubeck, Mary Wilson, Jamey Aebersold, James Carter, Stephen Riley, Ron Blake, Alan Pasqua, Bob Hurst, Annie Booth, Greg Gisbert, Rico Jones, Brandon Lee, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony to name a few. He is an active member of the Denver jazz scene and performs regularly throughout Colorado and the United States. He is a current member of The Coastal Collective, a jazz/hip-hop/electronic group based in North Carolina and also collaborates with Toronto based electronic music producer ALLIN. using live drums and electronics.
In 2011, Michael was invited to participate in the Ravinia Festival's Steans Music Institute for Jazz, an invitation-only workshop for rising jazz composers and performers with mentorship from David Baker, Rufus Reid, Nathan Davis, and Curtis Fuller. As an educator, Michael has presented clinics and masterclasses in the United States and internationally including the Jazz Education Network Conference, Eastern Washington University Jazz Dialogues Festival, North Carolina School of Science and Math Jazz Festival, North Carolina Music Educator’s Association Conference, and Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
