Matt Goves
Overview
Percussionist Matt Goves has been active in the Central Virginia area as a performer, clinician, and educator since 1990. He has been teaching private percussion and drum set lessons at Southern Music and Richmond Music Center since 1996 and credits his refined teaching style to the late Donald Bick, with whom he studied while attending Virginia Commonwealth University. Matt has served as instructor for numerous middle school and high school percussion ensembles, but he is currently Director of Percussion Studies at The Collegiate School in Henrico, Va., and has dedicated the last 12 years to Douglass Freeman High School in Henrico County, where he serves as Percussion Coordinator, overseeing the marching percussion program and the percussion ensemble.
Mr. Goves also enjoys a versatile and diverse performing career. In a seven year period, he performed 250 concerts a year and recorded three full-length CDs with Universal Records recording artists,·"The Ernies." Matt has also performed and recorded with many well-known regional act such as The Kyle Davis Band and country artists The River City Gang. In addition to his work with these popular bands, Matt's work as a percussionist has allowed him to perform with The Richmond Symphony, The Commonwealth Winds, and as a featured soloist with the VCU Orchestra.
Most recently Matt has been appointed to the faculty at Benedictine College Preparatory as Director of Percussion for their Pipe and Drum Band. Matt also performs regularly with The Greater Richmond Pipes and Drums and has won several first place awards in solo snare competition.
Matt currently resides in Bon Air, Virginia with his son Evan, wife Claire, and their dog, Miles.
