Overview

Hailing from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Jean Carlo is a versatile performer, composer and educator that connects western and nonwestern tradition into concert settings. He has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Santo Domingo, Jackson Symphony, Toledo Symphony and Adrian Symphony. In 2017, he was the recipient of the Alexander Lepak Percussive Award. In addition, he was the first Dominican to perform a marimba concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Santo Domingo in 2012. 

 

Venues include Percussive Arts Society International Convention, MASS MoCA, DROM NYC, Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito, Teatro Nacional de Panama, The CUBE Detroit, and in universities across the united state and central america. 

 

Jean Carlo performed in the GRAMMY nominated album Sila: The Breath of the World, in collaboration with John Luther Adams, The Crossing, JACK Quartet and the University of Michigan. Jean Carlo holds a Bachelor of Music from the Hartt School, two Master of Music and a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan. 

 

In 2020 Jean Carlo created a first of its kind project, Connecting to the Roots. This project brought to life for the very first time the compositions of six Dominican composers, written for solo Western percussion instruments. 

 

Since the fall of 2023, Jean Carlo has been serving as the director of percussion studies at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin.
