WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE PEARL?

The sound and feel of the drums is truly second to none. The tonal quality of the drums got to me immediately. My ears were already accustomed to the sound of Pearl. Some of my favourite drummers like Dennis Chambers, Will Kennedy, Mike Mangini, Omar Hakim and at the time Virgil Donati played Pearl and I was listening to them a lot and fell in love with the sound even though they all their individual touch...

1. What made you choose pearl?
The sound and feel of the drums is truly second to none. The tonal quality of the drums got to me immediately. My ears were already accustomed to the sound of Pearl. Some of my favourite drummers like Dennis Chambers, Will Kennedy, Mike Mangini, Omar Hakim and at the time Virgil Donati played Pearl and I was listening to them a lot and fell in love with the sound even though they all their individual touch. What I find great about the sound of Pearl is that with a variety of drumheads you can get a real pointed attack with a warm rounded body and sustain. It’s also just focused enough to sound great acoustically and at the same time be very microphone friendly.

As long as I can remember, I've always wanted to play the drums. I had a feeling that it could be something for me, but at the same time, I had a stupid belief that I needed a real drum kit to start and that I would never get one. It was a mistake that was holding me back from my dreams.

Everything changed when I went to university. I chose the Academy of Art in Szczecin, Poland, and during a presentation of various workshops, I found a huge hall with a very high ceiling (a terrible place to play, tbh) and a lot of different stuff, including a drum kit. When I saw it, I knew that I had to do whatever it took to play it. It was a Pearl Vision Birch, a 5-piece kit with a clear birch finish.

To get permission to enter this room, I had to take classes there, but there was a limit on how many students could be in the group, and unfortunately, I didn't get in. Luckily, my friend was in this group, and she also wanted to play, so we could start together. When I hit the drums for the very first time and felt those vibrations resonating in my body, I knew this was it — I wanted to learn how to play this instrument for the rest of my life.

For a few months, we played together, taking turns every 15–20 minutes. It was a real hot seat. It was fun at the beginning, but I wanted more. I talked to the owner of this kit and the room attendant, and I got permission to get the keys. I'm a fan of heavy music, so I had to have a double pedal. After a few months, some parts broke because it was a cheap piece of rubbish, so I decided to buy something more solid. I bought a second-hand Pearl P932 in very good shape. It was a game changer and allowed me to play more efficiently.

I have been playing for 3 years now, terrorizing the whole academy with blast beats and double bass. Of course, it's not my kit. It's for public use, but I take care of it as if it were mine, and I'm really attached to it. Unfortunately, one day I will have to leave the academy, and I will lose access to these drums. However, when I finally get my own kit, it will definitely be a Pearl, because it was my very first encounter with drums and I have a lot of good memories with them. I'm very grateful and happy that this drum kit appeared in my life. It brought so much color to it. Below is a photo of my setup for evening sessions and my friend from the period when we started.

I started learning drums a few years ago when I purchased the signature model snare drum released by my favourite Japanese female band SCANDAL drummer Rina @urarina821 together with Pearl @pearl.drums.jp @pearl_drums_global @pearl_drums

Pairing the snare drum with Pearl Reference drums as my drum kit, I love the sound and tone especially when I play SCANDAL’s songs. As a female drummer like Rina, I will try my best and continue to play drums.

Congratulations to Pearl on its 80th anniversary and I will continue to support by using Pearl’s products.

Rinaさんにずっと憧れて、ドラムを始めました。Pearlドラムの音が強くて、心に刻み込みました。これからもRinaさんに目指して頑張っていきます!

I started playing the drums when I was 4 years old, a passion passed down to me by my father. He owned an '80s Pearl Export, which was damn high for a 3 year-old girl! 😅 Since then, I’ve always owned and played Pearl drums. My dad is no longer with us, and I still keep that Export in his memory, even though I don't play it anymore❤️

In 1983, when I was five years old, my father had a Pearl drum kit in the attic. One day I sat down behind it and started tapping on the drums. My father still tells that story today. Back then, he laughed and said:

"One day he'll be the drummer in our band. That little guy was born to make noise."

By the age of ten, I was already playing regularly. My school strongly supported music through programs like the Wuppertal Student Rock Project. We even had rehearsal rooms at school, and my homeroom teacher, who was also a drummer, gave me lessons in his spare time.

A few years later, some friends and I started a heavy metal band in our basement. It was finally time to buy my own drum kit, and of course it had to be a Pearl. I was incredibly proud of it.

After school, our band went its separate ways, but my father's rock band was still going strong. Soon I needed a second kit, one for home and one for the rehearsal room.

My father, my stepfather, and I went to Music Store to look at drum kits. Once again, a Pearl immediately stood out from the rest. It felt perfect.

The problem was that it was over the budget my mother had approved.

That's when my stepfather looked at me with a grin and said:

"I've got a credit card your mother doesn't know about, so she doesn't need to find out either."

A few minutes later, the Pearl kit was ours.

That drum set became part of countless rehearsals and gigs with my father's band. In the end, he was absolutely right. The little boy who started playing drums in the attic eventually became the drummer in his father's band.

Today, I'm almost 50 years old, and four weeks ago I bought another Pearl kit. It sounds amazing, feels incredible to play, and every time I sit behind it, I'm reminded of where this journey began.

From a little boy in an attic to playing alongside my father and still choosing Pearl over 40 years later.

Once a Pearl drummer, always a Pearl drummer. ❤️🥁 #mypearlstory80

Before Pearl, the only thing creaking worse than my bass pedal was my aching back.
My son is autistic and non-verbal, and he has demand avoidance, so he doesn't respond well to teachers. But he's been drawn to drums since he was four.

So I made it my mission to learn, hoping to help him find a way in.
Somewhere on our journey, I fell in love with drumming myself.
However, I'm over 40, and I soon found that no matter how I adjusted my position, sitting behind the kit hurt after just 20-30 minutes.
Then I got my Pearl Roadster D-1500TGL. Now I spend TWO HOURS behind the kit without discomfort.

Next came the pedal.
I'd spent quite a while debating shortboard vs. longboard before choosing the Pearl Demon Chain P-3000C, partly because its modularity meant I didn't have to commit to either.
Suddenly, advice I'd heard from great drummers ("It should feel like dribbling a basketball," "Let the pedal do the work for you") made sense.
The pedal carried the weight of my leg rather than fight it, and the unintended doubles disappeared.

Today my son joins me in his own way: sometimes he sits at the kit, sometimes he uses my practice pad, and sometimes he just sits in the room while I practice. Drums give us a language that doesn't need words.
I'm now slowly building my dream hybrid acoustic/electronic kit, with two separate kick drums. A second Demon Chain for my left foot was already on the shopping list. Winning the Pearl Eliminator Mono Pro Chain would bring that kit closer, and give my left foot its own Pearl moment.

In 1991, i was 8 years old my drumteacher showed me a video from a man that i didn't know. I saw him playing. I was paralized! I asked my teacher: "Paul, who is this and what kind of drums are these?" He said: "Michael, this is Jeff Porcaro and i think he play Pearl Drums. But we will prefer Sonor!"😂😂 And my Dad bought me a... Tama Royalstar. Both good Kits. But always when i saw drums on the TV... i was looking for this special Brand😍😍 Than i grow up... time goes by... i earned my own money... and in 2006... i bought my first JoeyJordsion Export Kit. My very first gig when I was 12 years old - playing in a death metal band called Unborn Massacre! I was absolutely tiny and had a very cheap drum kit at home.. Showed up to the gig and there was a 3 up 2 down pearl ELX kit in grey fade kit.. The kit was sooo big for me and I truly felt like Joey Jordison who's pearl kit was my absolute dream! Fast forward 20 years later and I have a beautiful pearl kit of my own! (and have acquired a JJ snare with the slipknot S on it 👀)

Drumming has been part of my life since college, and now at 38, I’m still here sitting behind the kit, still learning, still playing, and still loving every beat.
I started drumming back in college, when it was simply something I was passionate about. I never imagined that years later, it would still be such an important part of my life. Through the years, I've played in different settings, experienced countless practices and performances, and gone through seasons where I played a lot and seasons where I barely touched the drums. But somehow, whenever I sit behind a drum kit, it still feels like coming home.
One of the things that has remained constant throughout my journey is Pearl drums. I've been using Pearl since my college days, so there's a special connection there. The sound, feel, and memories I've built around Pearl have become part of my story as a drummer. This photo is another snapshot of that journey. a reminder that after all these years, I'm still chasing that feeling of getting lost in the music.
My musical influences have also shaped the way I approach drumming. I’ve always been drawn to music where the drums aren't just there to make noise, but actually serve the song. whether it's driving an energetic rock groove, locking in with the bass, creating dynamics during a quieter section, or building toward that moment when everything comes together.
As I've grown older, I've also learned that being a good drummer isn't necessarily about playing the most complicated fills or showing everything you can do. Especially through playing worship music, I've learned the importance of listening, playing with restraint, leaving space, controlling dynamics, and knowing when to push and when to simply support the song and the people singing it.
At 38, I don't look at drumming as something I should have outgrown. If anything, I appreciate it more now. The younger me wanted to play. The older me wants to understand the music, serve the song, and enjoy every moment behind the kit.
From college until today, through all the changes in life, the drums have remained one of the things that have always been there. And as long as I can still hold a pair of sticks, I hope I'll always find a reason to sit down, count in, and play.
College kid with a dream. 38-year-old still behind the kit. Same passion. Same Pearl. Still playing. 🥁#mypearlstory80

I officially started playing drums at the age of 4, but even before that, around 1994–95, I was already hitting my uncle’s old black Pearl Export kit.

So Pearl were the first drums I ever played in my life.

I still remember...

To this day, I always played Pearl drums and it is my absolute favourite drum brand. ❤️ Best reason to play drums 🥁
