Overview

Brian Jones is Principal Timpanist in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, having joined in 2011 after having served thirteen seasons in the same chair with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Jones has also performed as guest principal timpanist with the orchestras of Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and Columbus, and has performed as a percussionist with the orchestras of Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Houston, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. Brian has toured and recorded with the Empire Brass Quintet, appeared as a performer on NBC's The Today Show, and was featured in a command performance for Prince Rainier of Monaco.

Mr. Jones earned a C.D. Jackson Award from and spent two summers with the Tanglewood Music Center, and was a Charlie Owen Scholarship winner at the Aspen Music Festival. As an undergraduate at The University of North Texas, he was a member of the Grammy-nominated One O'clock Lab Band, playing drumset and bass trombone in alternate semesters. Brian enjoyed more experience as a trombonist with the Dallas Trombone Exchange and the Dallas Jazz Orchestra. As a fellowship Master s student at Indiana University, where he earned a Performer s Certificate, Jones was Principal Timpanist with the Terre Haute Symphony for two seasons. Immediately after concluding his formal education with a Professional Studies Certificate under Alan Abel at Temple University in Philadelphia, Brian led the Percussion and Jazz Studies departments at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas for one year. Mr. Jones was then a fellowship percussionist in the New World Symphony in Miami Beach for three years, where he was also a concerto competition winner.

Mr. Jones served as Adjunct Professor of Percussion at The University of Michigan from 2001 to 2011, was a featured clinician at the 2004 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Nashville, and has given presentations and masterclasses throughout the U.S. and Japan. Brian has been recorded in a wide variety of musical settings on the Amazing, Argo, BMG, Crystal, Naxos, New Composers, Telarc, and UNT Jazz labels, has been published in the North Texas Percussion Press and the Percussive Arts Society, and endorses products for Adams/Pearl, Promark, and Evans. He has premiered solo works with the Detroit Symphony, the New World Symphony, and The University of Michigan.
