Peiying Li is one of China’s leading drummers and an influential figure in the global music scene.
Peiying earned her undergraduate degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, became the first Chinese graduate of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, and completed a second master’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD in Culture Studies at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, focusing on female drummers in media. She won the 2018 Hit Like A Girl International Drum Contest and has performed with Grammy-winning artists such as Dave Holland, Gary Burton, and Danilo Pérez, as well as Chinese icons like Wang Leehom.
Currently a faculty member at Qingdao Percussion College, Peiying directed and composed a drum show, A Centennial History of Drumset, performed by her students. She has authored influential publications, including Timing Training of Drumset and New Electric and Jazz Drum Grading Tutorial. Her work as a performer and educator has been celebrated in VOGUE China, People’s Daily, and National Magazine, cementing her role as a trailblazer in modern drumming.
