Gene Fambrough

Gene Fambrough is Assistant Director of Bands and Professor of Percussion at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he has been on the faculty since 2001. At UAB, he directs the Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Marching Blazers Drumline, Electro-Acoustic Percussion Group, Blazer pep band, and oversees all aspects of the percussion area. He has served as assistant conductor of both the Wind Symphony and Symphony Band, and in 2016-17 served as the Interim Director of Bands. He holds degrees from the University of Georgia (BM, Education), East Carolina University (MM, Performance), and the University of Alabama (DMA, Performance).
In 2015, his solo CD “Occam’s Razor” was released through the UAB Department of Music, and features 6 original compositions for various instrumentation. He has presented clinics at several Alabama PAS “Days of Percussion”, has appeared as clinician and guest artist throughout the southeast, and was a panelist for the World Percussion panel session at PASIC 2012. As a performer, he has appeared in the PASIC All-Star Steel Band and as a guest with a diverse group of artists, including Third Coast Percussion and Steve Vai.
Prior to UAB, he spent three years at Oak Grove High School in Bessemer, Alabama, as both Assistant Director and Director of Bands. His professional affiliations include the Percussive Arts Society, Music Educators National Conference, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Fambrough is an Associate Editor of Percussive Notes journal, overseeing the marching/rudimental area of scholarship since 2013. He is sponsored by Pearl/Adams Instruments, Sabian Cymbals, Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets, Evans drumheads, and Black Swamp Percussion, and has additional publications through Innovative Percussion and C. Alan Publications.
