A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Bernard Smith is a professional percussionist who has traveled the world from Atlanta to Tokyo sharing his passion for music. He attended Clarkston High School in Clarkston, GA. While in high school, Mr. Smith participated in many athletic and social groups, all while participating in the band all year long. His senior year, he was awarded the Coca-Cola Fine Arts Award for maintaining the highest grade point average from 9th-12th grade in the Fine Arts department.
Once he finished high school, he was accepted into Norfolk State University where he marched with the Norfolk State University Spartan "Legion" Band from 2005-2008. While attending Norfolk State, Bernard was inducted into Kappa Kappa Psi national honorary band fraternity incorporated. He also participated in the 2007 and 2008 “Honda Battle of the Bands” and the 2007 “International Tattoo”. His college band director Dr. O’Neil Sanford, selected him to be a guest Judge for a battle of the band in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
In 2009, he began to work with the theatrical production known as Drumline Live as a soloist and percussion tech. Bernard continued touring with Drumline Live for three more years. Then he became a member of the Atlanta Hawks Drumline, and also started teaching percussion at South Gwinnett High School. In 2014, Mr. Smith was hired by Universal Studios Japan (USJ) as an atmosphere performer and musician two shows “Drumline Beat” and “Christmas Drum Jam”. He lived in Osaka, Japan for a year performing for various crowds of all ages.
Currently, Bernard is the Creative Director of the Atlanta Braves “Heavy Hitters” Drumline, plays drumset for Christ Community A.M.E., and is the Percussion Director at Atlanta Drum Academy (Dekalb). All while maintaining his own percussion company known as In Time Percussion LLC where he teaches drum lessons, clinics, books drumline gigs, and offers school presentations.
Bernard Smith has contributed his talents to numerous schools and organizations with students and audiences of all ages. His Motto is; “Everything Happens IN TIME".
