Overview

Lucas van Merwijk, born in 1961 in De Bilt, Netherlands, is acclaimed as one of the premier jazz drummers of his generation, renowned for his virtuosic skill and innovative approaches that traverse a broad spectrum of musical traditions. With a career spanning over four decades, van Merwijk has profoundly influenced the landscape of jazz, Latin music, and global percussion.

Lucas's journey into the world of drumming began at an early age in his hometown of De Bilt. His passion for percussion led him to the prestigious Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam where he studied from 1980 to 1982, immersing himself in the vibrant Dutch jazz and salsa scenes concurrently.

From 1982 to 1986, Lucas played with the Boulevard Of Broken Dreams Orchestra, a project that combined music with theatrical elements. His explorations continued in Paris where, from 1984 to 1987, he collaborated with Cuban percussionist Henri Guédon, known as a pioneer in Latin and salsa music. This period was crucial in shaping his percussive style, which seamlessly blends diverse musical genres.

In 1987, Lucas became the drummer for Nueva Manteca, a Latin jazz/Cubop band that gained a significant following in Europe through their innovative music and dynamic performances. His role as a music educator also began around this time, with teaching positions at the Codarts Institute in Rotterdam and the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam.

The 1990s were a defining decade for Lucas. He founded the Cubop City Big Band in 1995, a group known for its vibrant salsa big band arrangements and international appeal. Their debut album, "The Machito Project," paid homage to Latin jazz great Machito and set the stage for the band's future success.

In 1997, Lucas ventured into the music industry with his record label, Tam Tam Records, launching albums that featured an array of international artists and eclectic sounds. This decade also saw him touring extensively with his various bands and participating in prestigious projects, including performances with renowned figures such as Denise Jannah.

The new millennium saw Lucas expanding his musical repertoire with the formation of Drums United, a percussion ensemble that brought together talented musicians from around the globe. This period was marked by extensive international tours, educational workshops, and groundbreaking musical collaborations.

His commitment to music education continued with teaching stints at the Manhattan School Of Music and the introduction of innovative drum workshops across the world, spreading his knowledge and passion for drumming to a new generation of musicians.

In recent years, Lucas has remained a prominent figure in the music world. His projects like Drums United and the Cubop City Big Band have continued to thrive, delivering performances that blend cultural musical elements from across the world. In 2010, his contributions to global music were recognized with the MCN Global Act Award.

The 2020s have seen him adapt to changes in the global music scene, with virtual performances and continued educational efforts, despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership role at the Dias Latinos festival in Amersfoort highlights his ongoing influence in the music community.

Lucas van Merwijk's career is a testament to the power of musical innovation and cross-cultural collaboration. His work has not only enriched the jazz and Latin music landscapes but has also inspired countless musicians and drummers worldwide. Through his performances, recordings, and educational efforts, Lucas continues to be a pivotal figure in promoting the universal language of rhythm and percussion.
