Simon Frasier University Win 2008 World Pipe Band Championships

Thankfully the terrible weather that had been predicted held with only one brief shower early in the day as crowds in their tens of thousands descended on Glasgow Green for the premium event on the calendar. A truly international event with over 8000 pipers and drummers representing 206 pipe bands from 16 countries gave 262 performances across the 8 competitive grades. 79 Drum Majors also competed in the Adult, Juvenile and Junior grades.

The Grade 1 final saw Simon Fraser University under the leadership of Pipe Major Terry Lee crowned World Champions for the fifth time. The band were in second place to Field Marshal Montgomery after the March, Strathspey and Reel event, trailing by 3 points.The Medley event seen Simon Fraser University turn the 3 point deficit into a 3 point advantage to take the title from 2006 and 2007 World Champions Field Marshal Montgomery from Northern Ireland.

The Drum Corps award in Grade 1 was also to go to Simon Fraser University led by Leading Drummer Reid Maxwell.

Simon Fraser took first place for drumming in both MSR and Medley events to finish 4 points clear of The House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead
