Chad Smith Shines with Supergroup- Chickenfoot

Last night was not an average Tuesday night on the Sunset strip in Los Angeles. For most who ventured out to the infamous boulevard they were heading to the Roxy for a rare chance to see 4 of the biggest rock stars on the planet play together in their own super-group known as Chickenfoot. The band consists of Joe Satriani on guitar, Michael Anthony (Van Halen) on bass, Sammy Hagar (Van Halen) on vocals, and Pearl’s very own Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) backing them all up on drums. A band with musicians of this caliber is an absolute rarity, especially to be playing in a venue whose capacity is only a couple hundred. However for the hundreds of lucky show-goers who were able to get tickets, despite the record setting sellouts, the smaller setting gave the fans a more intimate night with some of their favorite musicians.

Chickenfoot took the stage with authority, ripping into their first song and immediately whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Chad’s solid groove and amazing feel were the perfect backing to Michael Anthony’s smooth bass lines and Joe Satriani’s funky guitar riffs and awe-striking solos. Sammy Hagar was his usual self working the crowd in an almost scientific way. From running around to all corners of the stage, Sammy spent the night giving out high fives, dancing around, and having the crowd sing along to songs they were hearing for the first time.

The Pearl kit that Chad is playing on with Chickenfoot is already being considered to be one of his best kits amongst the fans. Since Chad has always been one to have flamboyant and exotic looking finishes, Pearl, Chad, and Nub from Nubs Graffix have teamed up to accomplish a beautifully detailed and extraordinary looking set of drums. The shells are made of 6 ply Maple (MCX Series) for optimum warmth and depth and they are in Chad’s usual sizes which consist of a 24x18 kick drum, 12x9 rack tom, 14x14 floor tom, and a 16x16 floor tom. Chad was also using his signature series snare drum which is a 14x5 steel snare with a black nickel plated finish. The months and months that the fans of Van Halen, Joe Satriani, and Red Hot Chili Peppers waited have finally come to a close. Chickenfoot, the All-Star band that we’ve heard so much about, but so little from, has finally arrived and is taking the music world by storm. Judging from the amount of fun that the band was having on stage, it’s easy to see why Chickenfoot will continue to be successful. These guys enjoy making music with one another and they’re incredibly good at it. To hear and see for yourself, check out their website at for upcoming tour dates and be sure to head to your local music store to buy their new album when it drops on June 9th.
