Julie Hill Brazilian Clinic at ACU

Pearl Artist Julie Hill, director of percussion studies at University of Tennessee at Martin, gave a three day residency at Abilene Christian University from April 16-18, 2011.  Hosted by Dr. Allen Teel, Professor of Percussion and World Music at ACU, Hill’s residency allowed her share her rich knowledge of Brazilian and World Percussion with ACU students as well as area high school students.

Utilizing ACU’s brand new line of Pearl Percussion Brazilian instruments, Julie gave a morning clinic for ACU and AHS students on Brazilian percussion.  Hill, who studied percussion throughout Brazil, primarily in the regions of Salvador da Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo, brings traditional techniques and sounds, and rhythms to her audiences.

In addition to the clinic, Hill rehearsed with both the ACU Percussion Ensemble and the Abilene High School Steel Band for a concert on the evening of the 16th.  Julie brought two of her own pieces for the groups to perform on the evening concert.  The ACU Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band, alongside the AHS Steel Band, performed Rudi’s Batuque.  The ACU Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band performed Hill’s Sonhando em Salvador.  The energetic and exciting concert was attended by over 450 people from the ACU community.

From host Allen Teel:

“The clinic and concert were both extremely successful. Julie is an outstanding clinician, and she made a very positive impression on everyone who attended the clinics, rehearsals, and performance. Several days after our events, I continue to hear great comments from those in attendance.”
