Habitat For Humanity Fire Drumline
The Habitat for Humanity of Westchester is proud to be the sponsor of the Fire Drumline, Yonkers, NY. Founded in 2012 under the direction of Mr. Will Semida, this percussion ensemble is comprised of inner-city youth from all walks of life, coming together to create music and build homes for families less fortunate. The HFH students were greatly influenced by the movie Drumline, which featured competitive drumlines playing Pearl Marching Drums. By teaching these children to play music together in a drumline setting, they are more likely to stay out of trouble and stay focused on being productive members of society. The HFH of Westchester budgets an allowance to fund the drumline and its equipment needs, providing these students with a wonderful opportunity to learn and perform.
The Fire Drumline marches in almost all New York City parades, bringing great exposure to themselves and the Habitat for Humanity program. However, the drumline does more than play the drums; they also volunteer to build homes for families in need. The Fire Drumline is a great method of reaching out to the young adults to volunteer to help the common goal set forth by Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, and allow the students to display their true musical talents.
Due to its growth in popularity, the Habitat for Humanity of Westchester has begun sponsoring additional Fire Drumlines around the NYC community. For more information about the Fire Drumline, please visit the HFH website or visit their Facebook page.
A special thanks goes to Peter Scattaret of The Muzic Store, Dobbs Ferry, NY for his work with the Habitat For Humanity of Westchester to make this wonderful opportunity possible.
