Chosen Vale International Percussion Seminar
For the past 3 summers in July, the most sought-after percussionists in the world and up-and-coming musicians gather in Enfield, NH for the Chosen Vale International Percussion Seminar. Taking place on the grounds of the tranquil and historic Enfield Shaker Museum from July 1-July 13, participants from across the globe amass at this two-week seminar to study with highly innovative and regarded percussionists and composers, in addition to practicing and performing on industry leading Pearl/Adams equipment.
Pearl/Adams instruments are an integral part of Chosen Vale, and have been since the inaugural 2011 season. “The generous support of Pearl/ Adams is one of the most important keys to the success of Chosen Vale. By having the best possible instruments at our disposal, we are able to learn and make music at the highest level” according to director and Pearl/Adams Artist Doug Perkins. Doug continues, “We at the Chosen Vale International Percussion Seminar are proud to be partners with Pearl/ Adams and hope that our relationship lasts a long time! Chosen Vale would not be Chosen Vale without Pearl/ Adams.”
The 8 member faculty includes Pearl/Adams Artists Doug Perkins (MP Duo/Ensemble Signal), Eduardo Leandro (Stony Brook University), Matthew Duvall (eighth blackbird), Jason Treuting (So Percussion), and Cynthia Yeh (Chicago Symphony Orchestra). 40 participants will have the opportunity to take part in lessons, masterclasses, chamber music rehearsals, and performances by these esteemed faculty members.
In addition to performing solo repertoire, attendees of Chosen Vale will be performing contemporary chamber percussion works, such as Paul Lansky’s “Patterns”. Clinicians Doug Perkins and Jason Treuting will be performing Steve Reich’s “Marimba Phase” to open this year’s Chosen Vale season. Both pieces will be performed on Adams Alpha Series Marimbas. “We are particularly excited to have our first glimpses of the new Alpha Instruments this summer!” says Doug Perkins. The music of composers such as John Cage, Phillipe Manoury, Ivan Trevino, Adam Silverman, and Jason Treuting plus many others will be performed by participants and faculty during the seminar, all while employing a variety of Pearl/Adams instruments.
Chosen Vale is part of the Center for Advanced Musical Studies, a program dedicated to providing talented musicians the opportunity to develop and expand their artistic perspective and voice. Edward Carroll, director of the Center for Advanced Musical Studies, believes “each and every musician should be focusing on developing a wide-ranging and original musical voice in order to become the type of artist who will thrive in the emerging world.”
