Ray Luzier Checks In from Korn & KXM Sessions, Announces Tour Dates

I don’t know how he does it, but Ray Luzier seems to be defying the theory of time lately, with an incredible and highly impressive juggling act of drumming prowess.  Between his main entity- the multiplatinum, Grammy Award winning, super rock band that packs arena walls each night- Korn, and his newly formed side project/super-group, KXM, Ray is simply living the insanely hectic double life of being one of today’s finest and most in demand drummers.
After spending the better part of the last 3 years on the road in support of their latest studio albums, Korn III: Remember Who You Are (2010), and The Path of Totality (2011), Ray Luzier and Korn received a much deserved break from the road toward the end of 2012, taking time to focus on their future- their next album.  Korn entered the studio to write and record their 11th studio album leaving their faithful fans anxiously awaiting the band’s triumphant return to stage, as well as curious and excited for the rumored “aggressive and in your face” sound the band claims to be returning to.  Adding to the excitement of the new songs and sounds, Korn’s recently announced tour dates will mark the return of the band’s original guitarist, Brian “Head” Welch, who will reunite with the band on stage for the first time since his departure in 2004.  A full list of Korn’s upcoming summer tour dates can be found below.

Ray’s newfound side-project, KXM, have also been on studio lockdown, taking up any of Ray’s remaining time away from Korn.  Consisting of world renowned guitarist of Lynch Mob/Dokken fame, George Lynch, and King’s X bassist Doug Pinnick, this fresh trio has discovered a fresh prog-rock sound derived from their biggest influences and spotlighting their individual and superior talents.  For Korn, King’s X, Lynch Mob and Dokken fans, and for rock fans in general, the anxious wait to see and hear what this prog-powerhouse will bring to the table is proving to be an excruciating one, with the release date of KXM’s debut album still pending.  However, updates on this all-star lineup will be announced as soon as it becomes available.

Throughout both recording sessions for Korn and KXM, Ray Luzier relied on a full scale setup of Reference Series drums, pulling pieces from some of his various kits that he’s used on tour with Korn, as well as his home-based Reference Series setup.  Switching and swapping drums for others of varying sizes throughout the process, Ray was promised the best possible tone from each drum in the Reference Series, with Pearl’s innovative Reference Series Recipe- the science of building and designing each drum with individual characteristics- providing the perfect pitch and ideal sounds.  Ray’s setup consisted of the following:

Reference Series:
Emerald Mist/Twilight Fade
w/ black hardware

24x18 bass drum (x2)
22x18 bass drum
10x8 tom
12x8 tom
13x9 tom
14x14 floor tom
16x16 floor tom (x2)
18x16 floor tom
14x5 Chad Smith Signature Snare
14x6.5 Sensitone Steel snare
14x6.5 Masters MCX snare
14x6.5 Ultracast snare

On top of his work with Korn and KXM, Ray has also been booking clinics throughout the US, which have been in high demand since his European clinic tour which surrounded his performance at the Musikmesse Show earlier this month.  On Saturday, April 27th, Ray will be performing at the Guitar center Workshop in Monroeville, PA, from 3-5, and on Thursday, May 2nd, Ray will be doing a clinic at his alma mater, The Musician’s Institute, in Hollywood, CA.
