Dream Theater Debuts at No. 1!
The new self-titled album from the iconic prog-rock legends, Dream Theater, has made a spectacular debut, topping off the Billboard Hard Rock Albums Chart at the No. 1 position, along with scorching up the Billboard Top 200 Chart, busting into the Top 10 and landing at the No. 7 position- all within its first week on the shelves! This remarkable achievement marks Dream Theater’s third consecutive Top 10 debut, and also finds Dream Theater, the album, reaching Top 5 charting debuts in Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Holland, and Finland, along with Top 10 debuts in Denmark, Austria, and Norway AND career high debuts in the United Kingdom and Australia as well.
Dream Theater - John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), James LaBrie (vocals), Jordan Rudess (keyboards & continuum), and of course, Pearl artist, Mike Mangini on drums - debuted the album’s first single, “The Enemy Inside” this past August with USA Today and recently premiered a companion music video for the track with Billboard. During the process of making the video for “The Enemy Inside,” Dream Theater were connected with Save A Warrior, an organization dedicated to embracing returning veterans in a healthy and nurturing environment and offering safe, innovative and evidence-based resiliency programs for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In the coming months, Dream Theater will be working closely with the organization to help bring awareness to soldiers suffering from PTSD through social outreach, fundraising drives and more. For drummers around the world, this new self-titled album from Dream Theater holds an entirely dfferent meaning; serving as the first time we’ll have the opportunity to fully experience Mike Mangini’s musical brilliance and creative input with Dream Theater. Although Mike Mangini’s recording debut with Dream Theater can be found in the band’s 2011 release, A Dramatic Turn of Events- which earned the band their first ever Grammy Nomination under the category of ‘Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance’ for the single “On the Backs of Angels”- Dream Theater, the album, stands as the first album in which Mike was present and active throughout the writing process, from the start. Dream Theater guitarist, John Petrucci said of Mike Mangini's work on the new album:
"When people hear the drumming on this album, they're gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album (A Dramatic Turn of Events), he did a great job, but he wasn't there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he's just Mike Mangini unleashed. It's all him. It's all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and, man, the guy's an animal."
Anyone who has seen or heard the work of Mike Mangini, knows that John Perucci’s assessment basically stands as the understatement of the year. Mike Mangini earned his position in Dream Theater back in 2010, after a highly publicized and grueling audition process, and, since becoming a member of the Dream Theater Family, has appropriately dropped the jaws of every onlooker who had the pleasure of taking in the’ Dramatic Turn of Events: World Tour’. Before becoming a member of Dream Theater, Mike had built an astounding resume for himself, having worked with Steve Vai, Extreme, Annihilator, Joe Satriani, and countless others, along with earning the title of World’s Fastest Drummer. Mike’s incredible independence, flawless technique, blistering speed, and genius mathematic approach to the drums have raised the bar for prog-rock drumming; leaving Dream Theater’s very faithful and highly dedicated fan-base more than ecstatic for the band’s decision to welcome Mike Mangini into the band.
Throughout the recording process for Dream Theater, Mike Mangini turned to his massive Reference Series kit, which was used for all of Dream Theater’s European dates of the ‘Dramatic Turn of Events: World Tour’. Complete with a 2-tiered Icon Rack system, a plethora of Demon Direct Drive pedals, a full set of Rocket Toms, 4 bass drums, and a handful of E-Pro Live toms with Tru Trac electronic drumheads, Mike Mangini’s incredible Reference Series drums serve as the perfect choice for Dream Theater’s vastly complex sound and incredibly wide range of tones.
