ASO 5th Annual Modern Snare Drum Competition

The 2012 Modern Snare Drum Competition took place May 27 - 29, 2012 at Rich Theatre in the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, GA.  Over the course of the competition, the judges heard over 15 hours of fantastic snare drumming from aspiring young percussionists.  This year’s judging panel included: Tom Sherwood (competition director), Michael Burritt, Casey Cangelosi, Marc Damoulakis, Charles Settle, and Sam Solomon.   Pearl proudly provided a 14x4 Brass Philharmonic Snare Drum as this year’s Division I First Place Prize.

Twenty-five students from around the country competed in the 2012.  This year's competition produced three great new solo works for the snare drum: Cooper by Michael Burritt, Thank You (     ) by Jason Treuting, And You and I by Jean Geoffroy.  As always, the playing level was extremely high and very inspiring.  In addition to the competition, Casey Cangelosi gave a clinic on technique and musicality.

The Competition results:

Division I (ages 25 and under)

First place: Eric Hopkins (Manhattan School of Music)
Second place: Xavier Verna (University of Michigan, graduated)
Third Place: Colin McCall (Eastman School of Music)

Division II (ages 19 and under)

Second Place: Brice Burton (University of Southern California)

Congratulations to everyone, participants and judges, for continuing to make this event an annual success!
