Overview

Sam is one of the nation’s hardest working percussion educators having consulted, instructed, and arranged for several junior high, middle school, high school, and university programs in addition to having presented numerous clinics around the United States.  Sam is a widely known percussion education specialist in the Western United States where he is rigorously involved in spreading the awareness of percussion education in the public school systems.  He is also a private instructor teaching students of all age levels and talent levels.  Sam has played in numerous percussion ensembles and symphonies and he has been involved in the drum corps activity (Drum Corps International) as a member of the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from 1987-2001 both as a marching member, percussion staff member, staff coordinator and director of percussion.  He has served as the Director of Marching Percussion at Weber State University, on the percussion faculty at The University of Nevada-Reno and as a consultant for the Blue Knights drum and bugle corps.  Sam is currently with McQueen High School in Reno, NV (since 2001) where they have been the perennial high drum trophy winners and he serves on the staff of Thom Hannum’s Mobile Percussion Seminar at UMASS-Amherst.  Sam has worked for companies such as Music and Arts Center, Pearl Corporation and MakeMusic (whose brands include Finale and SmartMusic).  Sam has presented seminars at several state music educators' conferences such as “How to Keep Your Drummers Out of Trouble” and "I Have a Percussion Class, Now What Do I Do With It?"  He has also performed on the soundtrack for the Interplay CD Rom Title, “Star Fleet Command” written by Ron Jones (Family Guy).  Sam is an artist/clinician/educator for the Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Company, Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, Remo Inc., and Pearl Corporation and he is an active member of The Percussive Arts Society.
