Victor Lewis
Independent - United States

Overview

As a kid, Victor Lewis studied cello, piano and finally drums, doing his first home town gigs in Omaha, Nebraska at age 15. The youngster was encouraged by such as Buster Williams and Billy Hart to make the move to New York where in 1974 he began a quick ascension to prominence. Clearly out of the Tony Williams school, Victor was the first-call drummer for masters like Joe Farrell, Dexter Gordon, and Hubert Laws and started long-time associations with Woody Shaw, Carla Bley, David Sanborn, Kenny Barron, Bobby Watson, and Stan Getz.

One of the leading drummers of our time (who recently appeared in Robert Altman's film "Kansas City"), Victor also has a second reputation as a dedicated composer and smart bandleader.

His new studio recording "Eeeyyess", presenting Victor's current working quintet and some of his most charming new compositions, will definitely be a highlight of 1997. Canadian Seamus Blake, now also with John Scofield's band, is a great contemporary sax player and leader of the fascinating "Bloom Daddies." Verve artist Stephen Scott, by many considered the greatest hope on piano, has recorded with such as Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson and Roy Hargrove. Scott's own band also features fast-developing trumpet player Terell Stafford who is reaching out for a bright future in jazz. Bassist Ed Howard is already known for his recordings with Clifford Jordan, Gary Thomas, Joe Locke, Richie Cole and others. On several tracks, this top-notch band of young lions is joined by veteran Don Alias who has been the first-choice percussionist for Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Weather Report, The Brecker Brothers, and other master musicians. What you hear on "Eeeyyess" is swinging, modern jazz of the highest quality and far from the broad roads of mainstream cliché.
