Percussionist John Hadfield’s dedication to bending genres has taken him from the jungles of Indonesia to concert halls and clubs across the world.This diversity has allowed him to perform with a broad variety of ensembles and artists including Yo Yo Ma, The Saturday Night Live Band on NBC, The Silk Road Ensemble, Bang on a Can, The Michael Gordon Band, the rock bands Dead Heart Bloom and Amandla, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, Combo Nuvo, MAYA, Phil Kline, The Bassam Saba Ensemble, Ethos Percussion Group, and Gamelan Dharma Swara. While performing with jazz groups John has worked alongside Kenny Werner, Lenny Pickett, George Garzone, Gil Goldstein, Andrew D'Angelo, Bobby Watson, Dominique Eade, Ben Monder, Satoshi Takeshi, Brad Shepik, Mike Richmond and Erik Friedlander. John can be heard on over 50 records and has performed on Broadway in Spring Awakening, Spamalot, Shrek and The Color Purple.
As an educator, John has taught The World Percussion Ensemble and drum set students at New York University since 2005. He has also given numerous clinics through out the world dealing with a range of topics, from basic drum set playing and stick control to applying Carnatic rhythmic ideas to drum set. He received a B.M. from UNLV and a M.M. from The University of Kansas City Conservatory where he was a teaching assistant. John spent 6 years marching in the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps and was the multi-tenor solo champion in 1996. Currently John lives in NYC, dividing his time between performing, composing, and teaching.
