Nathan Shew is an avid performer of many types of percussion, with his performing interests including playing for orchestras, bands, musical theatre, opera, and being active as a recitalist. Most notably, he is a percussionist with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared with several other professional orchestras, including Italian American Opera Foundation, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, South Bend Symphony, and Marion Philharmonic Orchestra. Nathan also enjoys playing as a pit musician for musical theatre and opera organizations, for which his credits include the 2012 Tuscia Opera Festival at the International Lyric Academy in Italy, Ball State Theatre productions, Chattanooga State Community College, and Muncie Civic Theatre. A student of Dr. Erwin Mueller, Nathan earned his Masters and Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance from Ball State University, has studied independently on orchestral percussion with Braham Dembar and Craig Hetrick, Latin Hand Drums with Johnny Lee Lane, and tabla with Dr. George Wolfe.
In addition to his passion for performing, Nathan also cultivates a love for teaching. Currently, Nathan is an Instructor of Percussion at Ball State University and Taylor University, where he teaches applied lessons and percussion techniques courses, and directs a percussion ensemble.
